EDO Qld meets new State Environment Minister
27 February 2015
This week EDO Qld, along with 23 regional, state and national environment groups, met in a roundtable with the new State Minister for Environment and Heritage Protection and Minister for National Parks and the Great Barrier Reef, the Hon Dr Steven Miles.
All parties agreed that the meeting was constructive and established a pathway forward for a more consultative approach to protecting Queensland’s precious environment.
EDO Qld impressed upon the Minister numerous issues agreed between the groups to be needing the most urgent attention. This included the need to put in place effective processes to ensure accountability and transparency in governance, particularly by providing adequate access to information and access to justice, as well as public participation in law reform and within legislated processes.
We congratulate Minister Miles on his appointment to this important portfolio and commend him for ensuring he meets with the environment groups at an early stage in his entry into office.
We are excited to work with Minister Miles and all of the Ministers to bring about effective law reform to ensure ALP are able to meet their laudable policy commitments. We are looking with positivity to a Queensland in which our natural environment is appropriately valued as a key aspect of our shared future.
Last week ABC’s Rebecca Levingston spoke to Dr Miles about the challenges of starting a new job with a big portfolio – listen here.
