Environmental Defenders Office Qld (EDO Qld) is an independent community legal centre, empowering the community to use the law to protect the environment.
We are your lawyers for the environment, driven by a commitment to justice and a passion for nature.
Our goals are to protect clean air, soil and water for safe and healthy communities; to restore and preserve nature, the Great Barrier Reef and wildlife; and to advance clean energy and keep our climate safe.
EDO Qld respects the democratic right of all citizens to run for elected office in their own time. EDO Qld does not support, promote or oppose any particular political party or candidate. EDO Qld promotes changes to law and policy which protect the environment and advance sustainable development.
Jo-Anne is EDO Qld's CEO and has provided invaluable legal advice and legal education to members of the public and community and environment groups, and has made critical contributions to reforming Queensland’s environmental laws, particularly in successful advocacy for expanded third party enforcement rights. Jo has worked on many successful test cases concerning the Commonwealth and State environmental laws.
After working with law firm Minter Ellison in Sydney in company and commercial law, Jo moved to Brisbane in 1992 to take up the position of Solicitor at the EDO Qld, and is now the longest serving EDO solicitor in Australia.
Jo-Anne graduated from Sydney University in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws.

Sean worked for government departments and private consultancy before entering private law practice with Corrs Chambers Westgarth where he practiced for 6 years before joining EDO Qld in 2011.
Having worked for all levels of government and a range of industries on broad ranging environmental issues, Sean brings a broad perspective to assisting the community and public interest at EDO.
Sean has degrees in both law and environmental science as well as a Masters in Environmental Law from the University of Queensland.
Andrew is EDO Qld’s general advice and litigation solicitor, working primarily on litigation relating to the Great Barrier Reef. His love of the outdoors has led him to be an environmental specialist with experience spanning environmental law, science and policy. Before joining the EDO in August 2013, he was a senior lawyer with the Queensland environmental department where he prosecuted environmental offences, conducted planning appeals and other litigation under state environmental legislation, and provided advice on compliance and regulation.
Andrew’s experience includes developing natural resource policy and legislation for the Queensland government, advising on UK and European Union law and policy with the UK’s central environmental department, and working as a conservation biologist with the Australian Rainforest Conservation Society.
Andrew holds degrees in law and science from Adelaide University.
Michael Berkman has worked as a solicitor at the EDO since July 2012, having previously been involved as a student volunteer, and works primarily on public interest environmental litigation.
