Thank you for your support this year. We can’t wait for 2018. Have a happy festive season.

EDO Qld’s last office day for 2017 will be 22 December. We will open again on 8 January 2018. If you need us, please get in touch before Friday.

Goodbye 2017; hello 2018

In and out of the courts, EDO Qld had major wins for communities and the environment this year. As 2017 comes to an end we reflect on the year that was - and how we plan to use the law to protect the environment on behalf of communities in 2018.

Election promises must be met

EDO Qld congratulates the new Qld Government under the leadership of returning Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk, and reminds them urgent action is needed to protect Qld’s environment. We also thank the nearly 2000 people who signed our petition calling on key policy asks for you and your environment. We've shared some of the insightful comments on our website

No rest for litigation team

As you know, it’s been a busy year for EDO Qld’s litigation team. The workflow isn’t set to slow down just yet, with our last legal submission for the year due on 29 December. Here’s a summary of what’s been happening in and around court for EDO Qld and our clients in December 2017.

EDO Qld farewells Michael Berkman

After 5 years, EDO Qld says goodbye and thank you to our litigation lawyer Michael Berkman. Michael is a talented and committed environmental lawyer and will be missed by both the EDO Qld staff and management teams as well as many of our clients. Alas, good people are always in demand and we wish him all the best in his future endeavours.

Event: Last LawJam of 2017 draws packed house

Our last public event for 2017, Donations and Other Dangers to Our Democracy, attracted a strong crowd. No wonder, given we asked Qld candidates to reply to our key policy asks just days out from this year’s state election. This is a testament to the public interest in repairing issues around accountability and governance in Qld. Thanks to all of our supporters who attended one of our community LawJams in 2017. Stay up-to-date with next year's events via our website and Facebook page.

Event: Acland community fights on

Our Principal Solicitor Sean Ryan recently went to Toowoomba to talk key findings of the Acland win at Darling Downs Environment Council's public forum on the historic Qld Land Court decision to recommend against the mine's expansion. The new Qld Government should follow the Court's recommendation to reject the mine expansion. EDO Qld continues to represent these landholders as they defend the future viability of their land, water bores and businesses against this mine expansion. Stay up-to-date with the latest on our website.

Visiting academics strengthen ties in law

EDO Qld had the pleasure of hosting a group of legal academics from the Research Institute of Environmental Law at Wuhan University - China’s leading environmental law research institute - this month. The morning was an insightful exchange of views on the progress in environmental law in our respective countries.

Make a donation to our Christmas appeal

There's still time to make a tax-deductible donation to EDO Qld's Christmas appeal. Your tax-deductible donation could make a real difference to the lives of Qlders across the state who otherwise might not be able to access legal assistance on important matters. Remember, as lawyers who specialise in environment and planning for the community, we are in a unique position to help. Make a donation >

EDO Qld promotes changes to law and policy which protect the environment and advance sustainable development. EDO Qld does not support, promote or oppose any particular political party or candidate. EDO Qld respects the democratic right of all citizens to run for elected office in their own time.
