Queensland's pending state election is an opportunity for us all to speak out in support of our state's environmental laws. If you care about healthy communities, the protection of nature, clean energy and a healthy climate, sign our petition now!

Queensland, it’s time for better environmental laws.

We call on ALL political parties to back 7 key reforms

  1. Citizen Rights - Strengthen community rights to information, objection, appeal and enforcement, especially for coal seam gas, mining and planning. Preserve “own costs” rules in the Planning and Environment Court.
  2. Fair Democratic Processes - Ban developer and corporate political donations. Strengthen and restore powers to the State Environment Department.
  3. Great Barrier Reef and Nature - Strengthen laws against unsustainable development, water pollution and carbon pollution. Protect pristine rivers, national parks, and wildlife. Expand “no go” areas for mining and gas.
  4. Safe Climate and Clean Energy - Transition Qld's economy away from fossil fuel extraction or burning, towards renewable energy and sustainable jobs.
  5. Excessive Tree Clearing - Protect our trees, wildlife and Reef by introducing strong legal protections against excessive tree clearing. Reform ineffective “offset” laws.
  6. Clean Up Queensland - Audit legal compliance of coal and gas projects. Protect groundwater and clean air. Introduce waste disposal levy. Ban environmental offenders from holding environmental licences.
  7. Access to Justice - Ensure EDO Qld can continue to provide communities with the legal assistance they need to protect their environment by increased government funding to EDO Qld.

“This current Qld ALP Govt was elected on a platform that was supposed to offer protection to our environment… and they have failed miserably! Stop putting dollars ahead of our natural environment! No more political donations and back door lobbying by mining companies, etc.”

“The political system is riddled with corruption around land management and development. Strong laws provide increased accountability and some protection for the community and environment.”

“Stop being Australia’s banana republic by allowing economically and environmentally crazy fossil fuel developments and instead preserve your amazing natural world as that will bring in much greater rewards.”

“Protect our wildlife, and our Great Barrier Reef, rivers, national parks, and stop excessive clearing which is happening in North Qld now, destroying habitat for koalas and many other birds and animals.”

“After years of waiting for one of our Qld premieres to accept that Acland stage 3 NHC is not a good thing for me or many others in and around Oakey, we finally had the win that has made it easy for you, the political party in power, to stop this outrageous open cut coal mine in its tracks. Why is it taking so long to accept what the land court has recommended? Please do the right thing for us, the locals, and for the future of our ground watet which will be needed.”

“Have to stop over development of the Gold Coast. The Southern end of the coast must be allowed to keep its pristine beaches, creeks and estuaries. The friendly locals welcome all without prejudice or fear. Their good family people that look after each other and vistors alike. Towns are more like villages offering good honest hard working bussinesses that share a love of their passions for all. Unlike their northern neighbors they don’t want the crazy poorly planned development bought to their paradise. Surfers Paradise is just that Surfers Paradise as the Southern end of the coast is the Southern end of the coast, we don’t want another Surfers Paradise with monstrous shade causing buildings swamping their beaches. Thank you”

“It is sickening that we have a government that is hell bent on destroying our animals and the environment in which they live. There is no compassion for any animal or our environment. (In 12 months between 2015 and 2016, 400 000 hectares was cleared in QLD and set to triple within the next two years. At present, every three minutes in Queensland alone an area the size of the MCG is cleared. Australia is listed in the top 10 land clearing nations of the world. Australia has lost more plants and mammals to extinction than any other country and has more threatened animals than 98% of the world’s countries). ). In the last two years Australia has lost 68 million animals due to deforestation. There is no hope for humanity if we can’t protect the vulnerable, voiceless and the defenceless.
And the fact the government is also trying to gag individuals and groups who do actually care about our environment and animals that oppose this destruction is nothing short of a dictatorship and our government should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. We are all interconnected and this destruction in the end also effects human health.
Only after the last tree has been cut down,
Only after the last river has been poisoned,
Only after the last fish has been caught,
Only then will you find that money cannot be eaten.
