Political donations should be banned: hearing

21 August, 2018

EDO Qld gave evidence at the Economic and Governance Committee public hearing on the Electoral Legislation (Political Donations) Amendment Bill 2018 on Monday 20 August.

Political donations from developers? EDO Qld strongly supported the Qld government's new legislative ban on those donations earlier this year. Yet, in our view, much more still needs to be done to promote integrity and impartiality in decisions by our governments.

So on Monday (20 August 2018), our CEO Jo Bragg and Solicitor Kate Grudzinskas (pictured, above) gave evidence at the Economic and Governance Committee public hearing on the Electoral Legislation (Political Donations) Amendment Bill 2018.

EDO Qld strongly supports the private member’s Bill, which proposes a prohibition on political donations from for-profit corporate donors, and calls on all parties to support it.

However, we think additional measures need to be seriously considered, such a public funding for electoral campaigns, and tightening the rules on the revolving door of employment between industry and government.

Environmental Defenders Office Queensland (EDO Qld) gives a strong legal voice to the environment when needed most.
