EDO Qld analyses Qld law changes for Reef campaign

28 March, 2013

EDO Qld recently prepared a legal analysis of recent changes to Queensland legislation and policy, at the request of the Fight For The Reef Campaign.

EDO Qld's detailed legal analysis is Appendix 4 to the WWF/Australian Marine Conservation Society Report  to UNESCO released on 31 January 2013.

The Great Barrier Reef has outstanding universal value, and is a major economic resource for Queensland, yet it has suffered and continues to suffer serious damage from poor water quality, excessive Crown of Thorns starfish, coral bleaching from climate change and natural events like cyclones.

Between 1985 and 2012 a staggering 50.1% of initial coral cover has been lost.

There have been many changes to Queensland legislation and policy since May 2012 and upon careful analysis, not one of them improved Reef Protection and in fact, many decreased Reef protection.

Environmental Defenders Office Queensland (EDO Qld) gives a strong legal voice to the environment when needed most.
