06 June, 2012

The Queensland Coordinator General has recommended conditional approval for the Alpha Coal project in central Queensland.

Gina Rinehart’s Hancock Coal and Indian GVK are planning on building a 30 million tonne per annum open cut coal mine near Alpha in the Galilee Basin.

They want to ship the coal 500km by rail to the Abbot Point Port near Bowen where it will be shipped to power stations in India and China. Federal environmental approval has yet to occur.
