Have your say: Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan

23 October, 2014

The submission period closes this Monday, 27 October.

The Australian and Queensland governments have released the Reef 2050 Long Term Sustainability Plan for public comment.  The Plan has been prepared in response to a number of requests by the World Heritage Committee to address the decline in the condition of the Great Barrier Reef.

Fight for the Reef have prepared a template submission: if you use it, please consider including a further comment about the need to make the plan enforceable (see the ‘Add an additional message to the Government (optional)’ box).  EDO Queensland suggests a comment along the following lines:

“The 2050 Reef Plan contains a number of important aspirational targets.  However, without these objectives being supported by legislation, I am concerned that the Plan will not ultimately protect the Reef for future generations.  Please ensure that necessary amendments are made to both Queensland and Commonwealth legislation to ensure that the Plan is backed-up by key statutory obligations on government, businesses and the general community.”

If you’d prefer not to use the template, the Australian Government provides an online form, or submissions can be emailed to

Please let us know at if you make a submission!

More details, and the plan itself, are available on the Department of the Environment’s website.
