Strategic Assessment – Great Barrier Reef

17 February, 2012

In response to the World Heritage Committee’s concerns about the development of LNG facilities on Curtis Island, near Gladstone, the Australian Government, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority and the Queensland Government are undertaking a ‘strategic assessment’ of the Great Barrier Reef.

They will be looking at the adequacy of the existing management arrangements and the likely direct, indirect and cumulative impacts of future development policies. Comment on the draft terms of reference is due on the 13 of April 2012.

Please note that there are two components of the assessment – marine and coastal – and comment is being sought on both.
