EDO Qld acted for Queensland Conservation Council (QCC) in one of the first Australian cases addressing climate change. The case challenged the expansion of a large coal mine operated by Xstrata Coal. An initial loss in the Land and Resources Tribunal was successfully appealed, but the Queensland Government enacted special legislation to preempt the retrial.
The State government’s review of the planning and development laws got hotter when peak environmental groups lodged a submission on the review of the Integrated Planning Act (IPA) - Queensland’s most important land use legislation.
"Cyclone Larry devastated the rainforest canopy near Mission Beach, North Queensland. This means the last remaining cassowaries are at risk of starvation. Urgent action is needed to address this issue," says Kirsty Ruddock Solicitor of EDO Northern Queensland.
