Volunteers: help us celebrate turning 30

28 May, 2018

EDO Qld is turning 30 next year, and we’re on the lookout for all former volunteer to help us celebrate. Find out how you can get involved.

After a public meeting in 1987 a decision was made to establish the EDO Queensland.  The office was incorporated in June 1989.  The EDO's founding committee members were Adrian Jeffreys, William McMillan, Don Henry, Molly Olson, Anthony Woodyatt and Ted Fensom. From 1990 small grants gradually increased and in 1992 there was enough funding to employ a solicitor for three days per week.

Our main work has been the provision of legal advice, legal education, preparation of substantial submissions on law reform and advocacy on law reform proposals.  For example, third-party enforcement rights in theNature Conservation Act 1992 (Qld) and the  Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld)  as well as  the inclusion of the "precautionary principle" in the Integrated Planning Act 1997(Qld) are the result of EDO Qld efforts.  The EDO of Northern Queensland, a separate incorporated association, was established in 1995.

Jo-Anne Bragg, of course, is the solicitor mentioned above.

From taking on cases that have helped create national legal precedent around environmental protection, to providing education resources to hundreds of community members,  EDO Qld has tirelessly advocated for better environmental protections and laws – so we have a lot to celebrate.

We would not have as much to celebrate without our volunteers. Over the 30 years in operation, EDO Qld has worked with literally hundreds of volunteers; ranging from law students gaining invaluable experience in a legal setting to planning experts and barristers donating their time to work on litigation.

That’s why we are looking to make contact with all past volunteers – so that we can keep you informed of anniversary celebrations as we plan them.

Past volunteers, please get in touch with us. We would love to hear from you.
